The Southampton U3A first met in the autumn of 1992, approximately 35 people attending. A committee was formed and a programme planned. In the first year there were 23 Speaker Meetings and 10 Interest Groups were started. There are now over 350 members, around 36 groups, and a wide range of interests. We have much to thank our founding members for, and remarkably several of those members still play an active part in the life of the Southampton U3A.
Committee
A committee of ten members is elected annually, and is responsible for the day-to-day organisation of Southampton U3A. No member may serve on the Committee for more than three consecutive years.
At present, the Officers of the Committee are:
Chairman: Christine Slade
Secretary: Brenda Gould,
Treasurer: Pat Ings
Membership Secretary: Fran Martin

Our Membership
Our members come from very diverse backgrounds and bring with them a wealth of knowledge, experience and skills from which we all benefit. From this varied source spring the Interest Groups which are the very bedrock of any U3A.
In addition, there are many social events and occasions when we are able to enjoy each others company, often whilst undertaking activities in which we share an interest.
Experience has shown us all that the more you put into your U3A, the more you will gain from it. Why not join us and find out for yourself?
Regular Monthly Meetings
General meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at St James Methodist Church Hall, St James Road, Shirley at 2pm. Non-members are welcome to attend up to two meetings on payment of 50p at each visit towards costs.
